Using Secure FTP to access websites

5Nines allows Secure FTP or SFTP only. Secure FTP, is used to prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to password and user information that is sent over the Internet as this data is encrypted.

There are many different Secure FTP client programs that can be freely downloaded on the Internet. If you use Dreamweaver MX, you do not need any additional software, simply click the box next to “Use Secure FTP” in the site definition.

For those who do not have a secure FTP client 5Nines recommends using the following programs for their ease of use and the functionality that they provide.

MS Windows Users: 5NinesData recommends WinSCP. Download it free by following this link: http://winscp.net/eng/download.php.

Linux Users: there are a wide range of free and shareware client available on the internet. OpenSSH is one of them and can be downloaded from www.openssh.com at no charge.

Macintosh Users: 5Nines Cyberduck 2.3.3 (requires Mac OS X 10.3 or later) http://cyberduck.ch/ or Fugu 1.1.2 (Requires Mac OS X 10.2.3 or later) http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/. They can be received at no charge. Or if you are a Mac OS 9 user there are shareware clients available like MacSFTP (Available for Mac OS 9 $25 per license) It is our understanding that the program FETCH will work in secure FTP Mode.

Using Secure FTP
There are three things you must know in configuring your SFTP program. The first thing you need is your host address. Next you need your user name or user ID, this is sent to you by 5Nines upon setting up your account. The last thing you need is your password which was provided to you from 5nines as well.

Please, note that 5Nines does not allow passive FTP connections. Make sure that your FTP program is set to use active mode. Usually, you will need to either uncheck "use passive mode" or check "use active (PORT) mode" in your client program options menu.
