5Nines supports local non-profit organizations
by Ankur Malhotra
We at 5Nines take great pride in our community and actively participate in making Madison the best city to live and work. That's probably because many of us were born here, grew up here, or came during college and never left.
What excites us most is when we get the opportunity to use our technology know-how to help non-profit organizations achieve their business and outreach objectives.
Here at 5Nines, we have a team that is quite passionate about music and the arts and have volunteered/worked with several local businesses and community organizations in helping them deliver customized technology solutions ranging from provisioning hardware to high quality streaming media solutions. Here are few examples of what we have been up to recently:
Goodman Community Center, The Media Works Program – The goal of this program is to introduce school children to the communications professions through mentoring and process immersion. 5Nines has been involved with the program since its inception earlier this year and has donated equipment, provides on-going technology support, and volunteer as teachers and mentors at the Center.
WYOU Community Television – When WYOU Director Barbara Bolan called 5Nines Data, she was two weeks away from a big station fund-raiser, a deadline to get the station’s live broadcast online, and uncertain whether a solution could be pieced together at all. Other data centers and service providers in the area had not been encouraging. But with the “can-do” attitude at 5Nines, we were able to work with the station and their internet provider to provision a live web-stream of the WYOU on-air video broadcast. Using a combination of hardware, software and some good old gray matter, the station relays the live broadcast signal to a server at the data center from where the web-friendly stream goes out to the world.
WORT 89.9 FM – We are also proud to provide Internet service, web-streaming and archiving solutions to Madison’s community radio station WORT 89.9 FM. A wireless Internet link connects the radio station to the data center, from where the live radio feed is rebroadcast online. The online broadcasts (and archived shows) are multi-streamed, i.e. users have the option to choose the quality or their listening experience based upon the speed of their internet connection. This is a point that is much appreciated by the listeners and fans of the radio station - here in town, around Wisconsin and the world.
We would be remiss not to mention the other wonderful organizations we also help support by volunteering both technical services and expertise: Willy Street Co-op, North-side Business Association, WSUM 91.7 FM, Wil-Mar Neighborhood Association, Madison Music Review, Madison Squash Association, German Shepherd Rescue Alliance of Wisconsin, MAMA (Madison Area Music Awards) and Capital City Soccer
Need a better internet connection?
With 11 different internet providers, customers in 5Nines' Madison data center have a wide choice of providers.
5Nines' data center in Madison is located within the Network222 building. This building is known as the carrier hotel for Madison. A carrier hotel is the location where several Internet providers maintain a point of presence to facilitate provision of service and connectivity with other clients and carriers.
It is a very strategic location for a company to occupy as it allows 5Nines to further provide best of industry service to its clients.
Additionally, 5Nines recently completed a buildout in the Wells Building in downtown Milwaukee. The Wells Building is the carrier hotel for that city. With a 100 Mbps connect between the two facilities, 5Nines is now able to offer very high availability services, as well as remote and real-time data recovery and back-up services.

Anderson & Mansfield Capture the 5Nines Canoe Cup
Larry Anderson and Eric Mansfield won the first annual 5Nines Data Canoe Race during the company picnic held at Wingra Park in Madison, WI. The race was close at the beginning and the team of Ankur Malhorta & Jorel Digman had a great start and got a jump on the field. But the power duo of Eric Gullickson & Justin McGuire showed their strength and quickly challenged for the lead. Meanwhile the team of Bill Dermody & Todd Streicher had a poor start, but they had great form and hit full speed to take over first place. But then it was disaster for the Dermody & Streicher boat as they made contact with both the Malhorta & Digman and Gullickson & McGuire crafts and all 3 lost speed. That left the smooth paddling team of Anderson & Mansfield out in front and they glided to a victory by a nose to capture the 5Nines Canoe Cup.
